CHAPTER TWO

I wandered the streets for a little while, aimlessly popping in and out of gift shops without really seeing anything, and without wanting to buy anything. As I passed a couple on one of the narrow twisting streets, I heard the woman tell her husband they only had an hour to eat before meeting friends for drinks at eight.

My stomach dropped. It was already seven o’clock? I looked at my watch, and it still said 2 pm. Shit. The ferry back to Piraeus leaves every day at twenty past seven. I broke into a run, careening through the tiny streets, trying not to fall or bump into anyone. I got a few dirty looks and several shouts in English and Greek to slow down, but finally I emptied out onto the broad walkway filled with bars that line the harbor.

In the distance, I could see the Hellenic Seaways flying dolphin ferry chugging out of the harbor. I slowed to a trot and covered my face with my hands. I couldn’t believe I’d missed it.

I turned in circles, my hands on my head. After a few seconds, I regained my composure. I headed to the lobby of the nearest hotel. It opened up into a fancy restaurant. The bartender smiled at me as I stepped up to the bar.

“Are you lost?” he asked.

I looked at him, confused. Then I looked around and realized I was seriously underdressed for this place. All around me men and women in suits and dresses sipped from long-stemmed glasses. For the second time that day I felt like a slob. I shook it off.

“I just missed my ferry; I need a hotel for the night,” I said with as much confidence as I could muster. “Can you point me toward somewhere that might have availability?”

The bartender frowned. “I’m sorry, but I don’t think you’ll find anything tonight,” he said reluctantly.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“There’s a big business conference here this week…” he said, “and it’s tourist season,” he shrugged. “I’m sorry.” He turned toward a woman standing at the bar, waiting to order.

“But I can pay,” I protested. I pulled my backpack off and reached inside for my wallet to whip out my credit card. I was ready to pay anything just for a place to sleep that night, and for somewhere to have a bath. I needed it. I pushed my guide book out of the way and the empty bottle of water. No wallet. Fear ran through me like a jolt of electricity. I started tearing through my bag frantically, but it was gone.

I turned to look around as if someone had just stolen it, and I crashed into a waiter carrying a tray of drinks. They spilled onto the front of me and into my bag before crashing to the floor. I stood there, looking at my soaked and sticky clothes, ready to scream.

Then a hand touched my elbow. I turned, expecting a member of staff there to escort me out of the hotel.
